When selecting a handheld cordless vacuum, we tested our picks on a set list of criteria.
Runtime: A cordless hand vacuum is going to have a rechargeable battery and is only going to run for about 15 to 30 minutes – max. Before recommending a vacuum to our buyers, we wanted to find out how long the devices could hold a charge for to determine whether or not it was a smart investment for the various jobs that need to be done. In addition to the per-charge runtime, it’s also a good idea to determine the battery longevity and whether or not the manufacturer offers a warranty with the device in question, as once the batteries go, the entire device may have to be replaced.
Controls and Switches: The majority of modern hand vacs are simple, which means they only come equipped with a single power switch or control. In some cases, this is going to have to be held down as you do your work, which is often difficult, tiring, and inconvenient, especially if you have some type of dexterity issue. If you plan to use a hand-held vacuum for much more than a fast pick-up, we recommend finding one that offers varying levels of speed.
Weight and Size: A quality hand-held vacuum is one that’s lightweight and easy to take from one place to another. We found that if the vacuum is too large, being able to take it to various locations is going to be extremely challenging, especially for the elderly. In addition to the weight of the vacuum, be sure to consider the size, too. Larger hand-held vacuums are typically more cumbersome to use, making it challenging for those who want a fast and easy cleaning process.
Design: The design of the vacuum is extremely important. We looked for devices with ergonomic handles and grips to make holding and using it simple. The portion of the vacuum that is used for sucking up debris should also be angled to make getting smaller debris into the attached storage container easier.
Attachments: Some handheld vacuums come with a number of attachments, including rotating brushes, which are ideal for cleaning up carpet and for collecting pet hair. Other attachments to look for include short accessor hoses, crevice tools, and dusting brushes that will help you work under and in between furniture and other items.
Waste Container: Waste containers are available in several sizes and shapes. While a larger container isn’t going to have to be emptied out as often, it may make the vacuum heavier to take from place to place. Also, the removal process for the container is important. Choosing one that is clear is ideal, as you can easily see when it’s time to empty it.
