How to Keep Fruit Flies Out of Your House

August 13th, 2019

Every homeowner would appreciate having fruits in their kitchen, but having fruit flies are definitely not welcome. Do you have to endure having those pesky fruit flies in your home?

The good thing is that there are actually ways on how you can battle these annoying insects and get them away from your house. While it can be quite tricky, below are some of the methods on how you can get rid of them and keep them out of your home:

1. Buy A Trap

One of the easiest ways on how you can keep those fruit flies away and successfully get rid of them is by buying a fruit fly trap. There are a lot of disposable fruit fly traps in the market. What you have to do is to simply open the lid of the trap and put it nearby the area where there are a lot of them. Expect to see quite a number of dead fruit flies the day after.

2. DIY Apple Cider Vinegar Trap

You can also make your own fruit fly trap. You will need the following:

  • A container
  • Water
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Dish soap

The first thing to do is to mix a few tablespoons of vinegar, sugar, and a few drops of dish soap into a half cup of warm water. Mix the ingredients together until they completely dissolve.

After that, all you have to do is to put in the solution in to the container, and place it near the areas of your home that are filled with fruit flies. The fruit flies will then become attracted to the solution, and when they come in contact with it, they won’t be able to get away because of the dish soap. Make a lot of these mixtures and put them in various places in your home.

You can also simply fill in a glass or container with apple cider vinegar. After that, cover it with a plastic wrap and seal the sides by using a rubber band. Make tiny holes on the top. The fruit flies will become attracted to the vinegar, and once they come inside, they will be trapped by the plastic wrap.

3. Use Beer or Wine

Another method to follow is to take out an old beer or old wine. You can then leave a bottle of old beer or wine near the area of your home where there are fruit flies. The fruit flies will be lured or attracted by the stale drink, and the narrow opening of the bottle will be able to trap them.

Prevention

  • Since fruit flies are lured by sugar and other organic materials, they will usually be found near fruits. What you can do is to keep your fruits in the refrigerator.
  • Make sure that you dispose of any trash or spills properly as well. Keep your home clean by wiping and cleaning up your kitchen counters in order to prevent further infestation.
  • Make sure to dispose of any damaged or rotten fruits as well.
  • Keep your drains clean too, because these can serve as breeding grounds for the fruit flies as well.
